What Is Paint
Correction?
Your vehicle's paint is constantly exposed to road salt, automatic car washes, improper washing, oxidation, and environmental fallout. Over time this creates swirl marks, light scratches, dullness, and haze that scatter light and rob your paint of its depth.
Paint correction is the professional process of permanently removing those imperfections — not hiding them. Using machine polishing and progressively refined compounds, we carefully level the clear coat to restore true clarity, depth, and reflection.
Every correction at Rangel is performed with precision, patience, and professional-grade tools to ensure safe, measurable results.
What Paint Correction Removes
These are the common defects that dull your finish — all of which proper correction can reduce or eliminate.
Swirl Marks
Fine circular scratches caused by improper washing and automatic car washes — the most common defect we see.
Light Scratches
Surface-level scratches within the clear coat that catch light and break up your paint's reflection.
Oxidation
Chalky, faded paint caused by prolonged UV and sun exposure, leaving the finish looking tired and dull.
Water Spots
Mineral deposits that etch into the surface from hard water, sprinklers, and rain left to dry in the sun.
Haze & Dullness
An overall loss of gloss and depth that makes even a clean vehicle look flat and lifeless.
Holograms & Buffer Marks
Streaky swirl patterns left behind by improper machine polishing — which we correct and refine out properly.
Our Correction Process
Paint correction is methodical work. Here's how we safely restore your finish, step by step.
Wash & Decontaminate
A full exterior wash plus iron and clay-bar decontamination removes all bonded contaminants before polishing.
Inspect & Test
We evaluate the paint's condition and run test sections to determine the safest, most effective correction approach.
Machine Polish
Using professional compounds and pads, we cut and refine the clear coat to level out defects and restore gloss.
Protect
We seal in the results with a ceramic coating so your freshly corrected paint stays protected for the long haul.
Which Level Do You Need?
The right level depends on your paint's current condition. Here's a quick guide — we'll confirm the best option at your evaluation.
Enhancement
Best for paint in good shape that needs a gloss boost and light defect removal. A single light polish to make the finish pop.
1-Step Correction
Best for light to moderate defects. A refined single-step polish that removes the majority of swirls and restores strong clarity.
2-Step Correction
Best for moderate to severe defects. A cut-and-refine two-stage process for the deepest correction and maximum gloss.

Why Correct Before
You Coat?
A ceramic coating is clear — it locks in whatever is underneath it. Applying a coating over swirled, scratched, or hazy paint permanently seals those imperfections in for the life of the coating.
Proper correction first is what separates a good coating from a great one.
- Maximum gloss & depth — your paint looks its absolute best under the coating
- Better coating bond — coatings adhere best to clean, corrected paint
- Longer-lasting protection — a proper foundation makes the coating perform longer
- Higher resale value — flawless, protected paint holds its value
Paint Correction FAQ
Technically yes — but it's not recommended. After correction, the clear coat is freshly leveled and unprotected. Without a long-term protective layer, the paint becomes vulnerable to:
- Rapid reintroduction of swirl marks
- Environmental contamination
- Water spotting
- Premature gloss loss
If you're considering correction without protection, we'll discuss the best option for your goals during your inspection.
Applying ceramic coating over damaged paint locks in those imperfections permanently. Proper correction first ensures maximum gloss and depth, better coating bonding, longer-lasting protection, and higher resale value. If you're investing in a coating, proper paint preparation is critical.
It depends on the vehicle's size and condition:
- 1-Step: 5–7 hours
- 2-Step: 8–14 hours
Final pricing and timing are confirmed after inspection, based on paint condition, contamination level, and the work required.
Correction removes defects within the clear coat — swirls, light scratches, oxidation, and haze. Deeper scratches that have gone through the clear coat may be improved but cannot always be fully removed without risking the paint. We'll set clear, honest expectations at your evaluation.
Both — it depends on the correction. Lighter corrections can often be done mobile at your home or workplace, weather and conditions permitting. More involved corrections are completed at our shop, where a controlled, dust-free environment produces the safest and best results. We'll confirm which applies to your vehicle during your paint evaluation.
